are starting back to school, Class 31 began their journey at the orientation and will be soon heading to the retreat, and most of us will look forward to the next major holiday…Labor Day!

CONNECTION is the word of the month. Connection equates to quality of life. The more connected we are to each other and our surroundings, the better life is. It’s never too late to connect again with classmates! LOK’s 30th Anniversary tagline was intentional. “CONNECTING leaders since 1986”; yes, the connection human beings so need to survive; thrive; grow. It’s not enough to be in the moment; choose the moment!

The annual membership campaign is in full force! You should have received your graduate update profile and invoice for 2017-2018 membership in the mail. Don’t forget to sign up for a committee or two as well! Renew today by going online or calling the LOK office.

Leadership Oklahoma is successful because of you – your time, energy, ideas, resources and your sincere concern about the future of Oklahoma and how each of us can do our part to help shape the future. We hope that you will continue your membership in LOK as we move into our next 30 years.

As a reminder, annual membership dues are $150 (in state), $25 (out-of-state), or $2,500 for a lifetime membership. LOK is continuing the three-payment options to become a lifetime member. Option 1: one-time payment of $2,500. Option 2: four quarterly payments of $625 (beginning July 1, 2017). Option 3: eight quarterly payments of $312.50 (beginning July 1, 2017).

Tulsa Zoo - Behind the Scenes at the Lost Kingdom
July 19, 2017

Attended: LOK Members – 32 | Non-Member – 24

This proved to be a wonderful opportunity to see the new Lost Kingdom at the Tulsa Zoo! Shane Fernandez, Class XXVII, President of Nabholz Construction, was instrumental in organizing this event and they were the company who built this magical exhibit! The remarkable new exhibit offers unique viewing opportunities. The Hille Foundation Tiger Bridge allows the Malayan tigers to walk above zoo visitors to travel between outdoor spaces.

If that’s not enough excitement, participants also had the chance to feed a giraffe and tortoise that was 32 years old! It had a twin and was housed with another tortoise that was 130 years old! The zoo staff also spoke about their master plans and future vision! This was a fun date night for many!

Thank you to Shane Fernandez, Class XXVII, Cassie Reese, Class XXVI, and Nabolz Construction for supporting and coordinating this event for our members! A big thank you to the Tulsa Zoo for their in-kind efforts to offer a wonderful experience.

LOK members came out with enthusiasm and numbers to greet Class 31 at the reception and orientation! Marion and Brent Kisling, LOK’s Board Chair, welcomed the class and members to the event. Lindy Ritz, Class I, did an excellent job telling LOK’s history; and new this year was Samonia Byford, Class XX and Membership | LOK Ambassador Chair, encouraging Class 31 to get plugged into LOK early and be a part of the greater LOK Network by attending some of the great member events planned this upcoming year. We all know the class experience is life changing, but the magic of this organization is this vast network across the state. Jodi Cline, Class XXVI | Adult Program Chair, spoke of all the places and topics the class will experience and Marion introduced the class members and their roommates for St. Crispin’s. Farooq Karim, Class 30, gave the “Best Class Ever Challenge” and encouraged them to attend all that the program offers….including the Thursday optional activities.

Those who attended picked up their copy of the 2017-2018 Annual Report and Directory. Lifetime and annual members will receive their copy in the mail next week!

Oklahoma City is one of 15 cities chosen to celebrate Navy Week across the nation. LOK members and guests will hear from Vice Admiral James Foggo talk about the importance of a Navy presence in Oklahoma and the nation. He has Oklahoma ties where he commanded the attack submarine, USS Oklahoma City (SSN 723) in 1998, which was awarded the Submarine Squadron (SUBRON) 8 Battle Efficiency award and the Commander Fleet Forces Command Adm. Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy for being the most improved ship in the Atlantic Fleet. Prior to being promoted to Director of Navy Staff at the Pentagon in 2016, his most recent assignment was commanding the U.S. 6th Fleet, Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO; deputy commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe; deputy commander, U.S. Naval Forces Africa; and Joint Force Maritime Component Commander Europe.

His leadership and experience is something you don’t want to miss hearing!

During your class program, you learned about the military, experienced the “life of a soldier” at Ft. Sill and possibly took the Tinker tour when you were in Oklahoma City. From Classes XXV – 30, those classes have had the privilege of flying in a Blackhawk helicopter in Tulsa, thanks to the Air National Guard.

Now is your chance to learn about the importance of the Navy, meet with seamen to hear about life on the water, tour various ships (Destroyer (DDG), Cruiser (CG) or one of their amphibious ships), visit Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI) where the helicopters (helos) are located, take a tour of one of the squadrons, see some of the aircraft, learn what their capabilities are and potentially meet some pilots.

Last, we will visit an Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team. These are the guys who work to disarm any type of explosive ordinance, just as you saw in the movie The Hurt Locker. Navy EOD technicians are specially trained to work underwater as well as on land, capable of disarming various underwater as well as land-based ordinance.

Brooke Hamilton, Class XXIX, and Kermit Frank, Class 30, will be co-chairing the event! Start thinking of who you’d like to have on your team now. It will be a 4-person scramble, so don’t worry if you don’t play much (or ever). It will be a fun atmosphere to connect with other LOK members from across the state. This is a great way to recruit people to apply to LOK and meet other members.



Class 30 – September 8-10, 2017 - Class 30 will experience a float trip on the beautiful Kings River just outside of Eureka Springs, Arkansas.  Dean Kruithof and Diane Jenkins will be hosting dinners and the group will have some outdoor fun floating the river. Should the weather not cooperate, alternative plans have been made. Contact your Class Ambassadors to confirm!

Class XXIII – April 26-28, 2018 – The 8th Annual reunion marked in the calendar, however, the location is TBA. Jeff Moen was selected at the 2017 reunion as the Social Chair (not to be mistaken for the Class Ambassador). More information will be forwarded as updates are available

"Helping Oklahoma" is a program developed to further Leadership Oklahoma’s mission to create, inspire and support leaders whose commitment to service energizes Oklahomans to shape our state’s future. It is designed to recognize Oklahoma volunteers who go above and beyond to make a difference in their communities and/or Oklahoma.

This is your opportunity to nominate a volunteer in your community who makes the kind of positive difference that deserves to be recognized. If selected as the winner, your nominee will receive a $2,500 prize to be donated to the charity of his/her choice.

The contest continues to evolve with the ultimate goal of honoring the everyday citizen for having a servant’s heart.

It’s never too soon to start thinking of volunteers to nominate! Deadline to submit nominations is February 8, 2018.
