Over the past two months, I have witnessed the cycle of coming together, keeping together and working together throughout Leadership Oklahoma – with the office staff, the Executive Committee, the Board of Directors, the Finance Committee, the Ambassadors and with the various local arrangements committees.

On exactly my two month anniversary (September 2nd), Class XXIX came together for the opening retreat at St. Crispin’s. Despite my neophyte status, the traditions continued and both the qualitative and quantitative data indicate a successful start to a great adventure.

The LOK graduates and community members of the Seminole area provided great welcoming gifts (including tickets to the Jasmine Moran Children’s Museum) and gracious hospitality.

As he has done each year for LOK, for the 29th year in a row, Gary Richetto facilitated the retreat from beginning to end with his wit, wisdom and steadfast commitment to the goals of the session: get to know fellow class members, gain insight into leadership styles and how they impact the ability to lead effectively, and establish the framework and expectations for the class year.

The opening retreat tradition continued with Melvin Moran, President, Moran Oil Enterprises, welcoming the class to Seminole and providing a brief history of The Jasmine Moran Children's Museum. As co-founder of the Museum, his remarks clearly demonstrated the impact one person, working with many on a common goal, can have on Oklahoma.

The St. Crispin’s Experience, was once again presented and led by Bill Andoe (Class XIV) and Ken Busby (Class XVII) and challenged the class to work together, be creative, take a risk, have some fun, learn something new and appreciate the arts.

Charlie Baker (Class I) and Bill Blew (Class I) once again led the new class members in a discussion and reflection of various leadership styles and scenarios; reminding all of us that perspective is essential to effective listening and vital to working together productively.

Under the leadership of Brent Kisling (Class XVI) and the Adult Program Committee, the subsequent sessions for Class XXIX are being planned to keep the class together and build a foundation for them to work together successfully for the betterment of their communities and this state. Next stop: Lawton/Ft. Sill – hooah!

Reflections on the Retreat

During the Leadership Oklahoma Class of XXIX Orientation, Dr. Paden promised to get us out of our comfort zone; and, she did just that at the retreat at St. Crispin’s Conference Center. Learning about ourselves through DISC and discovering leadership styles was quite rewarding; however, the “St. Crispin’s Experience” had most of us, if not all of us, out of our comfort zones.

As a rhythm challenged individual, I was mortified to be selected to perform with my group two songs on the African Drums. Within in minutes, the African Drum instructor, Mr. Arthur Thompson, had lulled us into a sense of security that allowed us to first relax and then have fun. Although I still can’t sing in Swahili, I’m quite proud of my drumming and how well my group performed together. I’m looking forward to more experiences outside of my comfort zone. I’m certain it will come bright and early in Lawton while trying to do “PT” with the troops.

Having participated in several personal profile exercises over the years, I did not expect to garner the level of insight about not only myself, but also the opportunity the “DISC Classic” system offers to learn different behavioral styles and how they fit into the work place culture and environment. The system truly enables the team to understand and capitalize on their unique differences in developing the roadmap for success.

»Youth Recruitment Begins!

Recruiting for YLOK Class XVI has officially begun! If you know a current junior in high school that you think would be a great fit for the next YLOK class, please encourage them to apply!

Applications are on the LOK website or can be requested from Lee Anne Stone, Youth Director, at lstone@leadershipoklahoma.com. Applications are due back in the LOK office no later than Tuesday, December 1, 2015. The dates for the YLOK program this year are June 5-10, 2016.

2015 Fall Forum Mind Shift: Silencing the Stigma, Changing Perceptions

How we talk about mental illness matters. It contributes to the stigma, funding issues, continuum of care, the criminal justice system. The goal of the forum is to attempt to change people’s perceptions of mental illness and ways to begin to make change in our state through federal, state, local, personal perspectives and solutions. The planning committee has been hard at work finalizing all the details. Ted Streuli (Class XXIV) is the chair.

From 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm forum highlights will include an overview of what mental illness is, experience simulations of what it’s like to suffer from various mental illnesses, learning the challenges and difficulties navigating through life with a mental illness, and hear from Terri White regarding the Smart on Crime Initiative. Throughout the day personal stories will be shared. From 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm, the participants will have an opportunity to network with each other during the reception. Immediately following the reception, Liza Long, author of The Price of Silence: A Mom’s Perspective on Mental Illness, will join us as our dinner speaker. Mark your calendar now and plan to attend this event!

A panel of experts from the industry will discuss UAV’s in Oklahoma giving perspectives on the marketable industries and applications, the State’s perspective, overview of the commercial technology development happening and the academic involvement to move the industry forward and available in OK. The Congressional delegation has been asked to come to give a policy/legislative perspective as well as a representative from the FAA. The event will end with the group splitting up to tour UAV labs and indoor UAV demonstrations. Static displays will be available to view from various companies/organizations.

5:00 pm – 6:30 pm (Optional Social Event) – LOK networking social event at MoJo’s Rocki’n’Bowl Grill: Stan has a new addition to the Stan Clark Companies! Whether you come to the UAV event or can only come by after work, we’d love to see you! This is a great opportunity to catch up with other LOK alums and possibly bowl a game or two. The cost is on you; the fun is on us!

»Annual Membership Campaign

LOK began its annual membership campaign June 1st. You should have received your graduate update profile and invoice for 2015-2016 membership in the mail. Please contact the LOK office if you have not received the mailing. To update your profile online, click here to preview the contact information we have for you and make changes as needed. Don’t forget to sign up for a committee or two as well!

LOK is successful because of you – your time, energy, ideas and resources. We share a commonality of a sincere concern about the future of Oklahoma and how each of us individually can do our part to help shape that future. Your commitment to sustain the organization enables us to keep providing innovative and challenging programs for Oklahoma’s leaders offering that “once in-a-lifetime” experience and ensures students continue to attend the Youth Leadership Oklahoma program free of charge.

As a reminder, annual membership dues are $150 (in state), $25 (out-of-state), or $2,500 for a lifetime membership. LOK is continuing the three-payment options to become a lifetime member. Option 1: one-time payment of $2,500. Option 2: four quarterly payments of $625 (beginning July 1, 2015). Option 3: eight quarterly payments of $312.50 (beginning July 1, 2015).

Class I has proved that it’s never too late to be a lifetime member; four of them paid for lifetime memberships in the  last few years!

We are happy to email you another invoice if you have misplaced yours. Contact the LOK office or go online to pay your renewal.

»Leaders on the Move

Laura Boyd, Class VII, was appointed to the OK Community Services Commission. In addition, Laura was elected to the Board of Directors for Integris Baptist Medical Center.

Jim Gebhart, Class XXVIII, was named Vice Chair of the United Way 2015 Campaign Cabinet.

Mary Blankenship Pointer, Class XXII, was recognized for her community service by the Points of Light organization.

Drew Ritger, Class XVI, was named senior vice president for develop by the Sonic Corporation.
